I Survived A Room Full of Mensans!

The very first speaker at our very first Monthly Gathering was Bill Sepe, who spoke to us about the Poughkeepsie-Highland Railroad Bridge Walkway Project in November of 1993. Astonishingly enough, he even made two return visits!
And speaking of our Monthly Gathering, we usually hold it at the Marlboro Free Library, just off US 9W in the village of Marlboro.
Another "threepeat" guest at our MG is Stu Quimby of Design Science Toys. Seriously nifty stuff. Stu will be our featured speaker at the 2002 Regional Gathering.
Interested in travelling to the moon? In January of 1995, Mensan Ian Randal Strock journeyed to the remote reaches of the Mid-Hudson Valley to tell us about the Artemis Project.
Okay, so Tom Rankin is one of our members. But he's also a member of the Mid-Hudson Astronomy Association; and, in that capacity, he gave us a presentation on comets in May of 1996. Here are a few of the comet-related links Tom has teased out from the tangle of the web:

In June of 1998, electronic musician, recording artist, concert performer, educator, New Jersey Mensan, and incredibly nice guy Don Slepian demonstrated his inventive machines, his musical talent, and his audience rapport.

Places to Go, Things to Do, People to See

A couple of times a year, the animation aficionados of our chapter meet at Upstate Films in Rhinebeck, to view the major festivals. (Usually Spike & Mike's and the International Tournee Of Animation.) This is the theater to go to in the Mid-Hudson Valley for all kinds of interesting but "limited distribution" films.

In May of 1997, members of three neighboring chapters-- Mid-Hudson Mensa, MONNY, and MOST-- spent a day at the home of the world's largest kaleidoscope, Catskill Corners. One of our biggest events ever, with thirty attendees!
Year after year, Mid-Hudson Mensa staffs the information booth at the Great Hudson Valley Balloon Race.
Our Third Annual "Mid-Hudson Multi-Chapter Camping Trip" was held in the Tolland State Forest in East Otis, Massachusetts.
In another multi-chapter event, Mid-Hudson Mensa and Greater New York Mensa attended the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Due to a problem in scheduling our 1999 Regional Gathering, we had to share the Ashokan campus with members of The New York Mycological Society. A fortunate happenstance, as they turned out to be boon companions!
A recent addition to our neighborhood is the Mid-Hudson Valley Artists Guild. And while you're there, don't miss its parent site, host to several nifty Mid-Hudson Valley sites-- including the thought-provoking Rhesus Monkey Magazine.

Individuals - Top of Links

The folks who originally donated the space to get us started on the web, Jan and Leo Doyle, belong to Indianapolis Mensa.
Our geographic region of American Mensa is Region 1, which includes the northeastern United States from Maine to northern New Jersey. This is the place to check if you live in our vicinity, but you're not sure which chapter covers your area.
- To our north is the Mensa of Northeastern New York chapter, with whom we occasionally host joint events.
- South of us, you'll find Greater New York Mensa.
- Our neighbors to the west, Central New York Mensa, have designed an elegant, all-browser-friendly web site that presents the essentials clearly.
- To our east is Connecticut & Western Massachusetts Mensa.
- To our northeast is New Hampshire Mensa. They have a great RG - formerly called "The RG at the End of the Universe", it's now called "The Granite Gathering."
- A bit further to the east of us, the Boston Mensa folks exemplify fine hospitality at their New England Pilgrimage regional gathering.
- To their south, you'll find Rhode Island Mensa.
- Another recent addition to the online Mensa community here in the northeast is Lehigh Pocono Mensa. A very impressive first effort.

- Just south of Region 1, the Central New Jersey Mensa chapter puts on the lively and well-attended Snowball regional gathering. Sign up now for the best rates-- March will be here before you know it!
- Another group that we have a lot of friends in is the Delaware Valley Mensa chapter.
- An exemplar of clarity and ease of navigation, the web site of Mensa of Eastern North Carolina also features a first-rate humor section. Don't miss the "Gullibility Virus" article!
- We've established a good exchange program with the newsletter editor of High Mountain Mensa, who consistently produces one of the best small-chapter newsletters in Mensa.
- One of the longest-running regional gatherings in Mensa is HalloweeM, presented by the members of Mensa of Illinois - Chicago Area Mensa.
- The folks over at Mensa 76, the North Texas chapter, have a well-organized site with some very intriguing links-- follow the "Web Essentials" link on their main page.

  If you're looking for a Mensan's personal page that used to be linked from the American Mensa list, but isn't any more, you may find it here. For various reasons, many members would not or could not comply with the American Mensa requirement that any personal pages linked to by the national site must include a PICS™ rating.
- Witty and informative wordplay has its home at Richard Lederer's brightly entertaining Verbivore web site.
- Artist and graphic designer Carol F. Mason, of Chicago Area Mensa, maintains a gallery of her lovely and thoughtful (naturally!) artwork.
- Another Mensan artist (a disappointingly rare breed) joins the web! Enjoy beautifully rendered cartoons and illustrations at Ian David Marsden's web site.
- You'll find a well-organized, concise, yet charmingly eclectic "Page O' Links" at the web site of Doug and Ellen Paul-- the Webmaster and Scholarship Chair, respectively, of Space Coast Area Mensa.
